The patient who got failed
Why I built Direct Mail Results.
I'm a marketer who got failed by his dentist. The way they tried to win me back made me leave for good. This company is what I built to fix the exact problem I lived through.
The story
The half-mouth cleaning.
A few years ago I booked a routine cleaning at a dental practice in [City]. I took a half-day off work, sat in the chair, opened my mouth, and waited. The hygienist did half my cleaning — one side of my mouth — and then stopped. She told me to book a second appointment for the other half. The practice's scheduling, she explained, didn't allow enough time per appointment.
I walked out. Half my mouth cleaner than the other. A half-day of PTO gone.
I never went back.
For the next six months, the practice texted me. They called me. They emailed me. Every "we'd love to see you again" reminder was another tap on a sore spot. By month two I was actively deleting their messages before opening them. By month four, I'd switched dentists.
My wife had a nearly identical experience at a different practice on the other side of the city. Different name, different hygienist, same outcome.
Two adjacent stories, two practices, the same pattern.
The realization
The reason I stayed gone was the reason they tried to bring me back.
What stuck with me wasn't the cleaning. It was the outreach that followed.
Every additional message from the practice reinforced the avoidance. Each text was a reminder of the place I'd written off. By the third or fourth touch, the channel itself had become contaminated — the messages were no longer about coming back; they were about the thing I was trying to forget.
The harder they tried, the more entrenched I became.
I work in marketing. I know how the reactivation playbook is built. Every practice runs the same playbook — text, call, email, then more of each. And every practice is running into the same wall.
The fix had to be a different channel, carrying a different message, sequenced differently. That's what I started building. That's what became The Empty Chair Recovery System. And that's what Direct Mail Results does — for dental practices first, for any practice with the same condition eventually.
What we believe
Four principles guide everything we make and run.
1. Most direct mail fails before it's opened.
If your envelope looks like every other envelope in the stack, you've lost the prospect before your message gets a chance. The format does the first job of getting attention — and if the format fails, nothing else matters.
2. The message is the diagnosis, not the offer.
People respond to copy that names what's actually wrong before it tries to sell them anything. "Come back, we miss you" is not a message — it's a request. Naming why someone left, and addressing it directly, is what unlocks the response.
3. One touch is a lottery ticket. Three touches is a sequence.
Single-shot mail is a guess. A sequenced campaign is a system. The math lives in the sequence, not in any individual piece. We design every campaign as a three-touch arc — never as a one-and-done.
4. Channel contamination is real.
When the channel you use to reach someone becomes the reason they ignore you, more outreach makes it worse. A new channel is the only way to reset the pattern. Most practices we work with have been over-mailing through text and phone for years. The mail piece is the first thing the patient has seen from them in a different format.
Who we serve
Built for. Not for.
Built for
- Canadian dental practices whose reactivation channels have stopped working
- Chiropractic, legal, and professional service operators running their own B2B direct mail
- Agencies and consultants buying supplies to run client campaigns
- Practice owners who want a turnkey system, not another marketing vendor
Not for
- Consumer e-commerce mailers (Valpak / coupon clipper format)
- Anyone looking for the cheapest possible postcard solution
- Businesses unwilling to wait 3–4 weeks for assembly and shipping
- Practices unwilling to participate in the operational consultation — we won't run a campaign behind a front desk that's not ready for it
Two ways to keep going.
